WiFi 802.11ax: the improvements that the new standard brings
The 802.11ax WiFi standard will start arriving this year and brings some notable connectivity improvements.
It will be the next generation of wireless networks for our homes and offices. The 802.11ax WiFi standard is going to enter little by little, in routers and devices. This year will see the first developments oriented to the commercial field, although the devices may take longer to arrive. The official date of his arrival was scheduled for 2019, but it seems that at the end of this year the first routers will appear and in 2018 mobiles and laptops.
802.11ax Wi Fi is the successor to 802.11ac technology, which commercial routers currently have. The differences between one standard and the other are in speed, as usual, but above all in capacity. And we are reaching a technological period where connections will be more and more numerous. It is true that greater speed is also needed, the video does not stop growing as content nor does its quality increase. But the next technological challenge looks more towards capacity and combating latency.
The trend that marks this is the Internet of things. In a large number of areas, simple devices will be installed, but they need a robust connection. Maybe they only launch a communication once a day, maybe not even that. But there will be many and, if they coincide, the network must be able to support all connections. Among other things because some of them may be urgent, such as alerts related to the security of a building.
Many of these devices will be connected by mobile networks. 5G is here the technology that is expected to solve network capacity problems, with midstream technologies such as NB IoT supporting early deployments. But if the devices connect to a WiFi network, the 802.11ax standard will be in charge of managing the traffic.
The new standard is expected to multiply capacity over current technology. This means reaching more devices. Qualcomm has already announced two chips – one for the access point and one for user devices – that allow a four fold increase in capacity.
With regard to speed, a significant increase is also expected. Qualcomm also speaks of four times the current one (the 4.8 Gbps of reference can be taken). Although Huawei has done tests where has reached 10 Gbps.
Needless to say, the efficiency will also be improved. The one that has been one of the workhorses in recent years will be even more so now. Qualcomm talks about a reduction in energy consumption by two thirds.
