Thus RS 25: the engine that will propel the most powerful rocket to date
NASA is working on a new type of rocket that will be the most powerful to date. The RS 25 engine will be the one that propels it.
The STS shuttles have served NASA since their initial flight in 1981 until they were retired in 2011. Three decades of space exploration that will be continued by a successor on which the US space agency has long been working. On the contrary, the RS 25 engine was actually found on the STS ferries.
Four of these ferries were built: Columbia, Challenger, Discovery, and Atlantis. These were practically reusable rockets, which carried out different space missions. However, Challenger and Columbia suffered accidents that destroyed them. To replace the first of these, the Endeavor was built in 1992.. It would be the last STS and it would also use the RS 25 engine, which of course evolved throughout the space program.
a cryogenic engine
The RS 25 is a cryogenic engine, which means it can operate with liquid fuels that require very low temperatures in order to stay in this state. They are normally liquefied gases such as hydrogen or oxygen. And in the case of the RS 25 it is these two that serve as food for engine engineering.
Each of these engines is a network of valves, pumps, turbines and a variety of other components. Have a weight of 3.5 tons and can operate in a temperature range from 253 to 3315 degrees. The nozzle, through which the combustion residue is expelled, has a diameter of more than three meters. In the RS 25 a computer is integrated that controls and monitors all the processes that occur in the motor.
