Russian developers are creating their own alternative to the Google Play Store

The invasion Russian of Ukraine led to a series of sanctions that hit Moscow. Google also acted accordingly, suspending payments for Google Play Store and YouTube in Russia.

Now, a Russian technology developer organization has announced a Play Store alternative called NashStore (“OurStore” in English). This will be compatible with the Russian Mir card payment system, allowing Russian app developers to receive payments.

“Unfortunately, the Russians can no longer normally use Google Play to buy apps and developers have lost their source of income,” he told the news. Vladimir Zykov, a representative of the Digital Platforms organization. “That’s why we created a Russian app shop, NashStore.”

The new app store will be launched on May 9. However, it wouldn’t be the country’s first local app market as the local tech giant Yandex previously offered Yandex Store as an alternative Android app repository.

Also this it would not be the first time that we see sanctions affecting the app store landscape in recent years. TO Huawei access to the Google Play Store and other services was denied following US sanctions in 2019, forcing the company to strengthen its existing App Gallery Store.
