NordVPN: Review

Today we are talking about NordVPN, an ever-expanding VPN service that is very competitive both in terms of price and the guarantees of anonymity.

What is a vpn

A VPN, or Virtual Private Network, is basically a network packet tunneling service. In simpler words, his raison d’être is to maximize anonymity on the Internet.

This mainly happens in two ways:

  1. The device, instead of connecting directly to the Internet, connects to an intermediary called a proxy
  2. Network traffic is encrypted from the device to the VPN servers

The use of a proxy allows you to mask your IP address, or the identifier of your Internet line, so as to make believe that they are located in another placesuch as another nation.

Cryptography is an equally important aspect in that prevents to any intermediary, legitimate or not, to read the information transmitted over the network. Not even your Internet Service Provider would be able to access it. However, we remind you that this only applies as long as the information travels to and from the VPN servers, once redirected to the actual destination, ie YouTube, only the encryption of the reference site applies, so continue to make sure you use HTTPS to maintain the secrecy of information.

Why use a vpn

Let’s start from an ideological concept and mention the well-known Edward Snowden:

Arguing that you don’t care about the right to privacy because you have nothing to hide is no different than saying you don’t care about free speech because you have nothing to say

Translating it: “not giving a damn about the right to privacy because you have nothing to hide is exactly like not giving a damn about the right to free speech because you have nothing to say”.

Privacy is a right in the Western world and it is the duty of the individual to do everything possible to protect it. Furthermore, personal data has become a high-value asset, it would be preferable to be able to decide who to grant it to rather than allowing anyone to collect it.

Fortunately, the right to speak and net neutrality are guaranteed in Italy, but in the event that even just one of these two fundamental elements is missing, only a VPN could protect the individual user.

Why NORDvpn

NordVPN is a service that can guarantee the anonymity and security of its users on the network, within the limits of what is possible (the user himself is always the weak link). The company has always used the no logs policy as a workhorse, which is one of the most important factors for such a service. This policy consists of not saving user information on their servers. This is essential for two reasons:

  1. Servers can be hacked, as a result data can be stolen
  2. Even in the event of government pressure, there is no data to be handed over to the authorities, for whatever reason

NordVPN also has in charge of PwCone of the four leading accounting, auditing, and legal and tax consulting firms in the world, of carry out independent control on the security of their systems.

PwC has confirmed that NordVPN does not permanently save information of any kind, other than what it is absolutely necessary to guarantee the performance of the service for a maximum of 15 minutesthen everything is eliminated.

Furthermore, the company has its registered office in Panama, which means that it is not required by law to keep information about its users and cannot be forced to share any type of information with third-party entities.

How to use NordVPN

With a NordVPN subscription you can use the service on 6 different devices; the Android application is obviously available as well as for all other major platforms.

The connection operation is absolutely simple and immediate: the interface allows you to choose the server based on the desired country and in a few seconds you are ready to browse total anonymity.

There are also special servers available that favor certain activities: for example, obfuscated servers work even if your network operator has prevented the use of conventional VPNs.

An added benefit is the ability to get a personal static public IP directly from your account settings, should the need arise.

Critical issues

As they say, not all that glitters is gold, nor is NordVPN a perfect service.

The main problem I encountered is due to the network infrastructure employed by the company: I have occasionally been connected to incredibly slow servers. This causes a significant reduction in bandwidth, even at unacceptable speeds such as 1mb / s downloading.

That said, when it happens simply connect to another server to resume browsing smoothly. Normally I have around 60 mb / s in download and with NordVPN I can mostly surf at 50-55 mb / s, which is absolutely acceptable speed.

It is also important to mention that a NordVPN server located in Finland was hacked in March 2018. The hackers gained access to information in transit at that time. NordVPN ensures however that no username or password was revealed and that the traffic in question was most likely HTTPS encrypted.

Finally, notice that some services do not allow you to mask your position and may ban your profile in case of violation of the Terms of Service. For example, one of these is Steam.

Cost

It is possible to subscribe in four plans that vary exclusively on the basis of time and price. A single month costs € 10.64, however you can get one 70% discount on the monthly cost through the 3-year option, to be paid in a single installment of € 111.82 (€ 3.11 per month).

If you decide not to be satisfied with the service provided, there is no problem because a full refund policy is available within 30 days of purchase.

Conclusions

NordVPN is an efficient and secure service sold at a reasonable price and is ideal for those who want more anonymity on the network. The simple and intuitive interface allows anyone to use it with minimal effort so the purchase is recommended.
