The world is changing faster and faster. Industrial Internet promises to be one of the next engines of change and Telefónica is positioned as a key player in this revolution

The First Industrial Revolution began in the middle of the 18th century in Great Britain and the Second Industrial Revolution arrived as early as 1850. Since then, the manufacturing industry was the one that moved the world, improving the lives of billions of people around the world. The secondary sector, therefore, was the engine of capitalism for two centuries. In recent decades, the services sector has also gained greater prominence in global economies and especially since the mid-1990s when the Internet burst into force causing the fastest economic change suffered by the history of mankind. In these twenty years, according to a study by the Boston Consulting Group, Internet has come to suppose 4.4 trillion (millions of millions) of dollars of the total of the economy of the member countries of the G-20.

However, while these figures on the digital economy and the internet may be overwhelming, it is nothing compared to what is to come. The great moments of advancement of humanity have arisen when great mergers of cultures, societies, markets, ideas and technologies have taken place. This is precisely what is beginning to happen with the industrial Internet. Within the framework of the 13th edition of the “Leadership Conference” in which Telefónica has brought together more than 600 executives from corporations and multinationals The technological trends that are to come were debated and deepened. Jose Maria Alvarez Pallete, CEO of Telefónica shared with all attendees the company’s point of view, explaining how Telefónica is preparing for this change and how wants to contribute to this disruption by being a key global player. “The world is at the gates of a new wave of innovation and change: the Industrial Internet, which will usher in a new era of productivity, with significant benefits in terms of growth and wealth”.

In this new scenario, with high connectivity, new areas of specialization for professionals and companies will be key: Biga Data, Cloud and Cybersecurity are just a few examples of which we have already spoken and that will be increasingly common in our day to day. Examples of the changes that must be faced are in Telefónica itself, which is no longer just a voice company, but thanks to a great effort, it has become a Digital Telco, and you get today, 38% of its revenues from Broadband and new digital services.

What will this new change consist of?

The Industrial Internet is going to take advantage of the increased computing and connectivity capabilities, as well as the low cost sensors offering current and future technology to converge with traditional industrial systems. This convergence will allow relaunching the global economy and is expected to generate an additional 15 trillion dollars within 15 years.

And how will citizens live all these changes standing?

The digital ecosystem will increasingly be made up of machines connected to each other. It is increasingly common to see people with wearables, connected cars, smart city applications in many countries around the world. Always thinking of making life easier for its users. However, the possibilities are limitless and even we are not even able to imagine what our home will be like connected 20 years from now by many efforts to visualize future trends that large technology companies show us.
