Even before the pandemic, online teaching showed remarkable growth. Between 2012 and 2017, according to consulting firm McKinsey, the adoption of online university courses in the United States grew by 40%, from 2.2 million students to 3.1 million. This trend exploded with the pandemic.

The logical thing will be for higher education to capitalize on this interest in remote teaching. But it will also be a tool available to schools. It is not the ideal method but it is already known that it is possible to put it into practice, although much remains to be learned. In the event of a weather incident that prevents attendance or if a child is forced to miss classes for a while, the online option is on the table. But it is not always easy to get the little ones to pay attention to these classes.

Remove potential distractions

Among the facilities that can be given to children to reduce attention problems is the fact of banishing everything that is not necessary. When the student is in front of the screen, she has to have at hand the least possible distractions. This includes, of course, any other electronic device that is not essential to follow the classes.

Smartphones, tablets, smart watches or the TV should be out of reach of the child. Any notification can lead to a diversion of care that later could mean a time of disconnection from the class.

Create a dedicated space

Whenever possible, it will be positive to avoid attention problems by reserving a specific space for online classes. It doesn’t have to be a specific room. It is a space within the home, like a corner in the living room table, for example. In this way, the child will associate the moment of being in front of the computer in that precise place with a moment of concentration and learning.

Generate routines to get away from attention problems

Having routines is important for a student, including children. At school, routines are generated by the center itself. Classes start at one hour, have a certain duration, after several of them there is a recess and then they resume. It is a dynamic that practiced day by day prepares students for their journey.

In remote education, it is not easy to establish routines. Those of the school lose vigor and it is the parents or the people who are with the child during his day who have to ensure a certain organization of the day to day. It is important, for example, to take breaks periodically, between classes. So that the child gets up from the spot, clears his head and returns after a moment ready for a new session.

Avoid interruptions to avoid attention problems

Another piece of advice, in order to avoid attention problems, is to have the devices and the Internet connection ready. If the platform does not start or there is a failure before the class starts, the rhythm that the lesson has from the beginning is lost. In the event of a poor connection it could occur interruption of the live video broadcast or there are latency issues. None of this is positive, as it could lead the child to divert attention. In addition, this type of technical failure generates fatigue in the long run that does not help to stay focused.
