Asus ROG 5 Phone Review: The Spec King is still a reference

The Asus ROG 5 Phone is Asus’ high-end gaming smartphone for 2021 and has all the firepower needed to be a benchmark in the Android market. At a time when competition from Xiaomi, Nubia and Lenovo is getting stronger, Asus takes advantage of all its experience in this segment to reach the public with a very refined proposal.

So the Asus ROG Phone 5 continues the good work of the Taiwanese company in recent years and inherits the principles of the ROG Phone line, striving to remain the “King of Specs”. TecheNet had access to a test unit and this is our full review of what could be one of the best 2021 gaming smartphones.

Asus ROG 5 phone: the king of specs is back

If in 2021 there are more and more options with maximum performance, the truth is that the video game niche has been gaining popularity and is starting to stand out more and more. The new smartphones This segment is no longer a mere smartphone with the high-end processor of its year and a more aggressive design, to become true specialized machines ready to maintain high levels of performance for long periods of time.

In this sense, the Asus ROG Phone 5 continues to be the benchmark in the sector, bringing with it an imposing technical list that makes it clear how serious this Asus proposal is. So for starters, we immediately have all the power of the Snapdragon 888, the “brain” of the Asus ROG phone. 5, ensuring the full performance of the device.

Playing more demanding titles like PUBG Mobile, Call of Duty: Mobile or Asphalt 9 becomes a natural experience, being almost “easy” for this Asus to compete with others like Brawl Stars or Horizon Chase. The smartphone, as expected, overcomes all the challenges that are proposed to it, even if that means maximizing the graphics. The number of frames per second is holding steady and despite the warming up, there is little noticeable performance loss over long gaming sessions.

It should be noted that the version you send us is the medium configuration, with 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 256GB of UFS 3.1 storage. Despite this fact, the full power of the Asus ROG 5 phone is brought to the service when expected, even if this is not the 16GB RAM version or even the 18GB Ultimate Edition version. To confirm the capabilities of our test unit, below are our results on the Geekbench, AnTuTu and 3DMark platforms.

It should be noted that the entire gaming experience will also depend on how the image reaches us. In this field, there is no doubt that Asus has done an excellent job by including a 6.78 ″ AMOLED display, with a maximum refresh rate of 144Hz, Full HD + resolution (1080p). This screen offers a high-quality image with excellent colors, and its refresh rate allows the Snapdragon 888 to exploit those extra frames that it manages to extract from each game.

The design of the Asus ROG 5 phone leaves no doubt about the lineage to which it belongs.

Turning now to looking at the exterior of the smartphone, there is little doubt that it is, in fact, a member of the Republic of Gamers family. The Asus ROG 5 Phone retains its classic lines, only slightly updated, but with the same black and red color scheme as the main option (and matching the tested version). However, there is now the option of a white version with blue accents that make the smartphone even more unique and eye-catching.

Despite being a markedly gaming terminal, it should be noted that it actually manages to go unnoticed by the public. Turning off the rear LED with the ROG logo, this is a smartphone that won’t be as stylish as other proposals like the Lenovo Legion Phone Duel 2, which might please some more discreet users.

Although it is more discreet than other options on the market in terms of design, there is no way around the large dimensions of the Asus ROG phone. 5. This is a smartphone that gets more complicated to use with one hand, with a height of 172.8 millimeters and a width of 77.3 mm. On the other hand, it’s not the thinnest and lightest smartphone you’ll find either, at 10.3 millimeters thick and weighing 238 grams.

The feel in the hand is therefore quite heavy for the user, with even greater discomfort for the tightest pockets. Still, the build and feel are nice, with a solid feel and the use of premium materials. In fact, there is a special care in the glass of the screen, protected by Gorilla Glass Victus, protection that does not extend to the back, “only” with Gorilla Glass 3, which will not be as resistant to scratches.

The entire side frame is made of aluminum, which in itself inspires a feeling of solidity. Despite not having been tested in our unit, it should be remembered, however, that this smartphone has some weak points, such as the antennas and the side USB-C port, which together with the double battery, make the ROG Phone 5 less tough than expected.

Daily use of the Asus ROG 5 phone has its ups and downs

With the exception of the most passionate users, the Asus ROG 5 Phone will divide its time between intensive gaming sessions and normal daily use. Therefore, it is worth checking its usability on a normal day, fulfilling its function as a smartphone. In this sense, it should be noted that the ROG 5 phone fulfills its role as a mobile device very well, without any notable problems in terms of connectivity or call quality.

The vibration motor is above average, but its tuning is clearly more game-oriented. The display itself, which we can’t help but praise in terms of image quality, could be improved in terms of brightness. Although slightly improved compared to its predecessor, the screen of the Asus ROG 5 phone was not always easy to see outside on sunny days, which may not be attractive to some users.

Using the smartphone in its intermediate efficiency mode ensures that you can achieve very satisfactory performance without penalizing the battery. And speaking of the battery, here we have a 3,000 mAh dual cell, making a total capacity of 6,000 mAh, allowing the average user two days of comfortable use. Even in intense gaming sessions, the smartphone guarantees at least 4-5 hours at a time with the least efficient settings. On the other hand, the 65W fast charge is fast enough to charge this device from 0 to 100% in less than an hour.

Another aspect that we really liked was the sound. First, there will always be little praise we can give to the ROG 5 Phone’s Stereo Sound system, the best we’ve ever tested and absolutely unbeatable on the mobile market, with a bass that puts some laptops to shame. And if the user wants, he can listen to music through his headphones or wired headphones, since here we have the audio input jack. 3.5mm.

In the security chapter, the Asus ROG Phone 5 allows the user to unlock the screen with facial recognition or with the fingerprint reader integrated into the screen. Now, if we have nothing to point out about the first option, the truth is that the second has disappointed us immensely. In addition to a manifestly slow response, it was also very imprecise, recognizing the fingerprint with great difficulty and only in half of the attempts. Although this could be a problem attributed to our test unit, other sources claim that this sensor had a difficult time doing its job, which is criticized for a terminal of this caliber.

Finally, it is convenient to address the chapter of the cameras. The Asus ROG 5 phone uses a triple rear photographic sensor, with a 64MP main camera that the results are very good. Even in night use, the ROG 5 phone’s main camera surprised us at the quality presented. In the opposite direction is the 13MP wide angle, which presents only average results, as does the 5MP macro camera. From the front, the selfie camera is of acceptable quality, but with some exposure issues. You can check all the photos in their original quality here.

Our opinion on the Asus ROG 5 phone is quite common given the widespread opinion. This is a device that gaming fans will love, with more than enough capabilities to devour any demanding payload in 2021 (and probably the next few days). 3 or 4 years), with a typical no-offense gaming design, a satisfying screen, and a sound system that positively surprised us.

Despite its large dimensions, we also like to use it on a day-to-day basis, as quickly as possible in all tasks. Thus, we conclude that it is a device that, despite its focus on video games, can also perform other types of functions, with a fantastic experience in multimedia consumption, autonomy well above the average and competent cameras, which we consider a of the most important. references in the sector.
